Anoto: a digital ballpoint pen

Anoto Digital Pen is a digital pen records everything written or drawn with the pen digitally on papers include special non-repeating pattern. The pen contains an integrated digital camera, an advanced image microprocessor, and a Bluetooth module for wireless connections. While using the pen, the digital snaps shoots of the pattern on the paper contains enough data to determine the exact position of the pen and what it writes or draws.

Beagleboard: linux-based PCB

Beagleboard is a USB-powered PCB that can be used as a micro computer with enough features. Different operating systems such as Ubuntu, Android, Symbian, and Debian can be installed on this board. In comparison with the other board I posted in this bog, this one is cheaper and faster (up to 600 MHZ).

Crowd sources maps and traffic updates

Waze is a mobile app that enables drivers to build and use live maps, real-time traffic updates and turn-by-turn navigation for an optimal commute. It uses the power of the crowd to build the database. Google mobile map also uses the data provided by the crowd to generate the traffic updtes. Roadee is another application based on OpenStreetmap.

Currently location-based augmented reality on mobile phones is a hot topic. Here are some examples I found:
  • Wikitude is a mobile guide with augmented reality functionality which draws displays information from various data sources, including: Wikipedia, Qype and Panoramio, and Wikitude.me.
  • Layar is a mobile phone application, which shows what is around the user by displaying real time digital information on top of reality through the camera of the mobile phone.
  • robotvision uses the accelerometer and compass technology of the iPhone 3GS and lets users discover content and locations around them.

Travel recommnedation communities

  • Joobili is an event-based travel recommendation system where users enter their desired travel dates, country of travel and interests. From here the Joobili community suggests a variety of events with a map view of the results.

  • Mendeley Desktop is a software that indexes and organizes PDF documents and research papers into apersonal digital bibliography.
